World Cup Soccer Mania in Vancouver

Vancouver is awash in a multitude of soccer jerseys from nations around the world but Canada’s maple leaf emblazoned jersey clearly dominates the downtown landscape.

With the FIFA World Cup games in cities all over North America this summer,  Vancouver plays host to 7 of the 104 matches with plenty of action across the city! Even if you don’t have tickets to watch the now sold out games, many watch parties that generally do not require any tickets are scattered throughout the city.

One of the best locations is at Jack Poole Plaza where not only can you view the game on big screens, but also to view the most scenic spot in downtown Vancouver: a picturesque panoramic backdrop showcasing the North Shore Mountains, Coal Harbour as well as cruise ships and the photogenic Digital Orca statue.

If you’re looking for a slightly more energetic activity, there’s Granville FAN Zone where there’s fun for the entire family with games, food and live music that spans five pedestrian blocks.

For the most whimsical soccer-themed art installation, look no further than the “laughing men” statues at English Bay, where several of the statues are dressed in soccer jerseys from various nations.

And for an absolutely iconic soccer selfie, head over to Science World (conveniently adjacent to BC Place Stadium, where all 7 matches are played), where the geodesic dome has been transformed into a huge soccer ball. No matter which venue you choose, the infectious enthusiasm of the fans and the excitement of the games are clearly palpable throughout Vancouver!
